Statement from NBDA Regarding Police Abuse of Tyron McAlpin in Phoenix, Az.
National Black Deaf Advocates Denounces Abuse of Black Deaf Man with Cerebral Palsy
The National Black Deaf Advocates organization (NBDA) strongly condemns the brutal treatment of Tyron McAlpin, a Black deaf man with cerebral palsy, who was repeatedly punched and tasered by law enforcement officers in Phoenix.
In a recent video release police can be seen jumping from a police vehicle and immediately instigating a violent assault upon McAlpin. Due to his deafness and a neurological disorder that affects his ability to move, balance, and maintain posture Mr. McAlpin appears unaware of why he’s being suddenly attacked.
The shocking incident underscores the urgent need for accountability and systemic reform within law enforcement, especially regarding the treatment of individuals with disabilities—specifically those within the Deaf community.
Cluelessly the officers response is if he had told them he was deaf it could have been avoided. They never gave him an opportunity to say anything.
Reports indicate that felony charges against Mr. McAlpin have been dismissed following this altercation with police. The circumstances surrounding this case raise serious questions about the use of excessive force, the lack of proper communication methods for Deaf individuals, and the failure to recognize and accommodate disabilities during police encounters.
“This tragic incident is not only a blatant example of police misconduct but also highlights the intersectionality of race, disability, and systemic injustice,” said Sheryl Emery, NBDAs President. “We cannot allow our communities to be subjected to violence and discrimination, especially when individuals require understanding and appropriate accommodation.”
The NBDA calls for an immediate investigation into the actions of the Phoenix officers involved in this case. It is imperative that law enforcement undergoes training to effectively communicate with and serve Deaf individuals, particularly those with additional disabilities. We urge local and national leaders to prioritize policies that ensure accountability for police misconduct and foster an environment of safety and respect for all individuals, regardless of their race or abilities.
Moreover, we demand that Mr. McAlpin be made whole with restitutions and mental health support be provided to him, acknowledging the trauma experienced during this horrific encounter.
As advocates for the Black Deaf community, the NBDA remains committed to fighting for justice, equity, and the protection of our most vulnerable members. We stand in solidarity with the victim and his family during this difficult time and will continue to raise awareness about these critical issues within our community.
